Compare and Contrast Two Texts
Read both passages carefully, then answer the questions below.
Passage A: The Kiwi Bird
The kiwi is a unique bird found only in New Zealand. Unlike most birds, the kiwi cannot fly because its wings are very small. It is about the size of a chicken and has brown, fluffy feathers that look like fur. The kiwi has a long beak with nostrils at the tip, which helps it sniff out food in the ground. Kiwis are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They eat worms, insects, and berries. Female kiwis lay very large eggs compared to their body size.
Passage B: Our National Treasure
New Zealand's kiwi bird is a national icon and appears on our money and stamps. This special bird is nocturnal and sleeps during the day in burrows. The kiwi has poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell. Its long beak is perfect for finding food like beetles, spiders, and fruit hidden under leaves and soil. Sadly, kiwis are endangered because predators such as stoats and cats hunt them. Conservation groups are working hard to protect kiwi populations across New Zealand.
