The Lost Kiwi
Maya woke up early on Saturday morning, excited about her school trip to the wildlife sanctuary. She quickly ate her breakfast and packed her lunch into her backpack. Her mum drove her to school, where she met her classmates and boarded the bus.
When they arrived at the sanctuary, the guide took them on a tour through the native bush. Maya spotted tūī, bellbirds, and even a gecko sunbathing on a rock. After lunch, the guide announced they would visit the kiwi house, a special dark building where the nocturnal birds were kept.
Inside the kiwi house, Maya's eyes slowly adjusted to the dim red lighting. She watched in amazement as a small kiwi shuffled around, poking its long beak into the soil searching for insects. Suddenly, Maya noticed something strange—one of the kiwi enclosure doors was slightly open!
She quickly told the guide, who immediately checked the enclosures and discovered that a young kiwi was missing. The guide radioed for help, and everyone began searching carefully through the sanctuary. Maya remembered seeing movement near the fern grove earlier. She led the guide there, and sure enough, they found the little kiwi hiding under a cluster of ponga ferns.
The guide gently returned the kiwi to its enclosure and thanked Maya for her quick thinking and excellent observation skills. On the bus ride home, Maya couldn't stop smiling. It had been an unforgettable day!
